Up for bids is a 1956 Ford F-800 Big Job / Great Eastern Pumper. This truck is in very nice condition for its age, the pictures speak for themselves. I will do my best to describe this truck to the best of my ability. I am going to break down its description into sections to try and cover everything. As with any used vehicle this truck is being sold in as is, where is condition and there are no warranties or guaranties expressed or implied herein. I am offering the chance for any potential buyers to inspect the truck in person, prior to bidding, and any questions are welcome so feel free to ask. Be sure to check out the photos as they speak volumes for the condition of this truck!
Cab & Body: The body of this truck is a real eye catcher. The Ford cab is in very good shape and the cab paint holds a nice gloss and shine as does the chrome. The doors look good and the windows all operate. Glass is intact all the way around. Windshield wipers work fine. Headliner is in good shape and the seat also looks great. Odometer, tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge, and AMP gauge all work. Water temp gauge is not working / responding. Headlights, tail lights, turn signals, spot lights (front and rear) all work. *Red warning light have been disconnected as per Ebay policy but all worked properly prior to being disconnected. Cab heater fan functions properly. * There is a small access hole for filling the brake master cylinder under the drivers foot that is missing the cover plate and from my understanding, it hasn"t been there for quite some time. There are some scratches, small paint cracks, and dings on the body of this truck, again, it is a 59 year old fire truck that has never undergone a restoration so it is not perfect. I just want people to understand that cosmetically speaking she is pretty but has some battle scars. There is no rot thru on the body of this truck that I have been able to find but there are a few rusty areas on the hose bed dividers and underside of the rear fire body that could use some attention. Running boards have had various tools mounted and removed over the years but are solid, I think a good soda blasting and coat of metallic would bring them up nice.
Engine: Equipped with a Ford / Lincoln Y block 8 cylinder gas engine. The engine is clean and was rebuilt about 8 years ago while still owned by the FD. I have not found any coolant leaks and there are a couple weepy or damp oil seals, but nothing major that I can find. The oil and filter were changed last month and she was filled with Shell Rotella oil. The air cleaner is an oil bath type filter. She fires right off with no visible smoke from the tailpipe, and after warming up for a few minutes is ready to go down the road. Top speed is approx 35-40 MPH. Please keep in mind that this truck has made 4 to 5 mile round trips its entire life so I would not recommend pushing it a great distance, but I have driven it a few 50 mile round trips with no issues. I can recommend a few hauling companies that I have worked with in the past and have done a great job.
Transmission, Brakes, Handling, Tires: Equipped with a 5 speed manual transmission. Clutch feels good and she shifts thru the gears fine, trans is a little chatty when slowing, but under power she sounds fine. Truck has a drive shaft, band type, hand parking brake which could use some attention as it does not hold the truck in place (adjustment / repair / relining may be necessary). I typically only use the clutch to start off when driving this truck and use RPM"s to shift thru the gears. Truck has (Hydrovac) hydraulic vacuum assisted brakes. They are a little grabby the first or second time you push the pedal on a trip but after the first couple pushes they are fine. The brakes stop the truck with no problems that I have noticed. Once the flat spots (from parking) on the tires round out she drives down the road good for her age. Again, I have only ran it at 40 MPH and would not recommend pushing it much harder as she is geared low. Steering is good, like a 59 year old truck, no excessive play or pulling. Tires have decent tread all the way around (I would estimate at least 65%+ tread).
Fire Pump: Truck has a 500 GPM 2 stage centrifical pump and 750 gallon water tank. Fire pump engages fine. The truck pumps and builds pressure when pumping from a hydrant. I don"t think the truck has pumped regularly in over 15+ years. The steel water tank has rust in it and I have not messed around with it as I don"t want to draw whatever is in the tank into the pump (rust / scale etc). I would say its fair to assume that the tank will need to be replaced or rebuilt if you plan on putting this truck into some kind of regular firefighting service. Water tank level gauge does not work. Just about all of the ball valves operate but a few of the drains are stuck and or not connected. Rear mounted booster reel with manual hand crank. The pressure relief valve wheel is very stiff and the pump (pressure / volume) shift does not respond. The primer motor comes on when you activate the button but I have not attempted to draft with it so I am not sure if it is functioning to its full capacity. Some of the chrome finish on the pump escutcheons are chipped / peeling. The pressure gauges responded when hooked to a hydrant but the tachometer at the pump panel does not respond, the tachometer in the cab works fine.
Equipment: 3 Sections of hard suction, various couplings, wrenches, extinguishers, pick head axe, hose, nozzles, portable master stream, and refinished wooden extension & roof ladder are included. Everything pictured on the truck is included with the truck.
In closing she is a really nice truck that would make a great addition to any collection. I have done my best to describe this truck but, again, I encourage any potential buyers to set up a time to see it in person and inspect the truck to your liking prior to bidding.
Thanks for looking and good luck!
