1999 Freightliner Century Series with 470HP Detroit 60. I bought this because its a pre-emmission Detroit 60, a high Fuel economy engine, that I can modify as I wish for even better fuel economy, get parts just about anywhere, get fixed anywhere and reduce significantly the downtime needed for proactive maintenance, or any unexpected emergency repair. No waiting a week or two weeks for a dealer to work on it.
Currently with the $400 Fleet Air Filter,, running 65MPH at 80,000, I get an average of 6.9 to 7.4 MPG depending on the lane, terrain, and outside temperature. Running at 62 MPH, it can perform consistently at 7.2 and above. With a series of additional inexpensive modifications, this is truck is capable of performing at 8 to 9 MPG.
It has 925,000 miles on it, properly maintained and driven the motor regularly can go 1.2 Million and above before a in-frame is needed.
I bought it a year ago from a mechanic who made repairs and the owner could not pay. I paid $9500.
I began immediately with enhancing it a area at a time. I 1st put a new turbo, then a Reman super 10 eaton Tranny and shift tower, had the air brake system, purge valve, dryer rebuilt, all air leaks gone, new brakes, drums, wheel seals on the drive axles, engine retarder/brake operational, cruise control operational, new steers with less than 10K miles on them and replace one steer aluminum wheel, drives have 4 new tires with less than 30K on them, the next 3 have 65% tread, sliding 5th wheel operational, just did a overhead with new cam seals installed, new clutch just done along with new u-joints. All totaled, I put over $12,000 in parts and labor in it.
Cosmetically for a 1999, its if pretty decent shape on the outside, interior is 1999 but fair to good shape. Plastic interior that old and you always have to take care opening up something as its dry and brittle where ever a screw or bolt needs to be loosened or tightened. A number of new switches in the panel and doors have been installed as well.
All that said, this is a work horse of a truck that runs with or better than the best of them out there. Plenty of HP and carries" a max load with ease. Why pay $400-700 a week in a truck payment to pretty truck, when this can perform just as good or better and have that money save go into your pocket. I am allowed to run 5000 miles a year without retrofitting to meet CARB laws in California. I run all other continental 47 states in the blink of a eye. Never had a road call breakdown other than the normal tire blowouts that come with the business, especially on trailers.
I got it purring just right, however, with my age, came with what medical conditions no one wants to have surface but did, that require me to get off the saddle for several months while hopefully being treated successfully. If all turns out well, God Willing, I will find another pre-emmission truck then and climb back up.
Sad part is parting this out would fetch more than I am asking or originally paid for the truck for that matter but I have bigger battles to face right now medically and no time to possibly waste in parting out myself. Price is firm, and will change out the a/c compressor, dryer and driver window motor with that price. If you"re buying and that"s of no interest, than $10,000 cash will be accepted.
