Possible Injectors or Injector Pump
The truck wasn"t running right on a recent trip up to Atlanta, so we had it towed, and a mechanic who looked at it said that he thinks it is the HEUI pump and or injectors, but I am no mechanic so I am just going off what he said... he:
Removed and Replaced Fuel Filter,
Pulled exhaust and intake pump off, and turbo checked out ok
Fuel Pressure checked out ok.
Pulled HEUI rail plugs (pulled a ¾” drain plug at the end of the rail), drained all the oil out of the rail, and saw “glitter” in the oil. He cleaned the metal “glitter” shavings out as best he could (using a magnet, etc), and then refilled the oil, and now it runs ok… He said it should run for a short while until it happens again. 5 miles, 100 miles, 500 miles, who knows, but it should be ok “for a bit”… but it will happen again and needs to get fixed. He said that if it went bad again, a guy who knew what he was doing could limp and nurse it along the road to get it home if he had to, but the draining/replacing the HUEI oil and restarting it was not a side-of-the-road operation.
The mechanic said the engine smokes, and when you let it run for a while and heat up, there is in fact “blow by” occurring. He said/explained that there is a breather tube on the pan, and when oil pressure builds in the pan area as a result of oil pressure pushing past the cylinder rings, that pressure comes out the breather tube as a kind of oily steam; it can also be seen at the dip stick tube and sometimes at the filler cap (although he didn’t look there on this engine). He said it only takes about 2 or 3 pounds of pressure for this to happen, but that it is an indication that the engine probably has bad rings, and needs to be “done”/ gone over.
He said that Most likely metal shavings from a failing High Pressure Injector Pump or (HEUI Pump) are making it past the injectors and scratching the cylinder walls.
To the best of our knowledge, the HUEI Pump/ Injector kid has not been replaced on this truck.
