Here we have a great project for the old Peterbilt fans. It is a 1996 379 Extended Hood with 290 wheelbase and a 84 Inch Double Eagle sleeper with living quarters. (stove, microwave, bathroom, etc.)
The truck had a light fire on the right rear front tire. The fire did virtually no damage to the truck itself. We put an airbag on, a couple of air lines and replaced the tire and rim with another super single that we had. The tire is not an exact match but got the truck up running and driving.
The frame had some paint burnt off from the fire so the insurance company totaled the truck in case of damage to the frame"s strength from the heat. We have seen many fire damaged vehicles and are not afraid of this frame at all. The heat was so low that the paint was barely burnt off the frame. The tire was not completely burnt off nor the airbag completely burnt up. Both had just blown out from the heat. We feel sure the frame will be fine with just cleaning up and painting which the whole frame needs anyway so we didn"t spend much time on that.
The truck now has a West Virginia Reconstructed title which can be registered again in any state just like a clean title.
The truck will need a lot of TLC to make it the show truck it once was. The paint is faded and the hood is cracked. The right front fender will need replaced. The door tops are corroded and the frame will need cleaned and painted. The sleeper is also in rough condition. The sleeper floor has been wet and is soft where it has rotted. In our opinion the truck would be an easier fix to just get rid of the sleeper.
All in all this is still a valuable truck when finished and even though the odometer shows over 2 million miles, it runs great. The engine, trans and rear ends all seem to be good and tight. It has good power, starts good, shifts good and carries great oil pressure and show no major leaks so we believe the drivetrain has been completely rebuilt in recent years.
If you are in the market for a long wheel base extended hood Pete and don"t want to spend 100K this truck will be cheap and if you can do the work yourself the pleasure comes from the finished truck that you have made your own.
We are selling this at No Reserve so only bid what you think it is worth and be willing to pay after the auction is over.
If you have any questions please e-mail me on the listing and I will get back to as soon as possible. Thanks, Ted Davis
