Just listed for sale on Long Island, NY by Melville, NY is this heavy-duty classic Diesel DM Mack Rollback Truck. All in very good shape and ready to go. This was used to move equipment and some collector tractors around the last several years which have now been sold so it is no longer needed.
It"s very handy and is built like a brute. 22" foot tilt bed. In one photo it"s carting around an 10,000 lb. farm tractor and the driver barely knew it was loaded. It"s been inspected and on the road through 2015 and since we aren"t using it this year we haven"t got it safety inspected for this year yet in case a out of state person buys it. But we had a local truck inspector stop out last month and look at it. His shop is 25 miles away and he saw no issues that it wouldn"t pass again for 2016 and he drove it and checked it all out. He couldn"t believe how this truck has literally no rust on it and said he saw more surface rust on a 2005 model he had just looked at. There is one spot on the cab back rain line that could be patched but that is it and there is no rust even on or in between the rail frames underneath - or in or around the cab since the steel on the cab is thick as can be. The inspector also commented we had this Mack under priced.
It is currently registered in New York State until September of 2016. 146,000 miles. It makes for quite a nice looking, powerful rig as you can see. It is a 1968 and it cost the current owner next to nothing to insure since he had it on his antique auto policy and just used it to haul tractors and equipment to shows or to get repaired. It has original paint and has has invested over $7,000 in it the last several years including new tires, brakes and suspension to make it all a nice road machine.
This Mack has a modern setup with both a tiltbed and rollback. After it rolls back gravity drops the deck to the ground and then you can power it from there to get within 6 or some of your equipment or vehicle, etc.. In addition it has a monster winch. Brakes are airbrakes. Seat is air ride. Cab is all original and in good shape and the heat works and these Mack"s did not have AC back then but a person could install a system if they wished. It"s a real basic set up inside and everything works good. Note on the side there is a stainless steel toolbox in some of the pictures that was added a few years back and that does not go with the truck as it came off something else. This truck in addition has a monster spring suspension, not an air ride suspension.
The Mack chassis # on it DM477S. As far as Mack history goes the DM -- was the Heavy Duty version of the U model (U= Short hood offset cab). The S code = Six wheel chassis. The U and DM series were modifications of the R series. A short hood, and the shorter bumper to back of cab distance, made them useful in straight trucks and in semi-tractors used in congested cities, but caused the engine to intrude into the passenger compartment. To compensate the cab was offset to the left: the engine doghouse intruded into the passenger footwell but left the driver"s position intact. The U was basically a short R, while the DM was an extra heavy duty version of the U often used in 6X4 construction trucks.
    More details:
Has a 10 speed Road Ranger transmission.
Heavy Metal Steel Diamond Plated Floor over wood underneath all in good shape
    Has regular standard steering
    Double Frame Bed
Parking brakes are the type where air builds up - not a hand brake
New handles on doors and windows in recent year.
Batteries new just 6 months old
Winch is strong enough it could probably move a house.
Top speed currently is 60 mph
Has the popular and very desirable Mack 237 Diesel Engine (237 HP)
Steel is like a 1/8th inch thick and no issues just a little minor surface rust around bolt heads and joints. It looks to have maybe been repainted many years ago.
Air ride seat is like new.
Before this Mack was bought it was owned by a company to haul heavy equipment. We"ve never been able to exceed her capacity. 6 of the tires are brand new (less than 100 miles) the other four rears are about 60% and do not require replacement. We know some guys who like to haul stuff around with B model Macks but they are not as reliable as this Mack DM. We"ve never seen a monster like this with a heavy duty tilt deck. For a fun truck to own that can take on any huge heavy work task this Mack DM is at the top of the list.
I do like old farm tractors like John Deere, etc. and may consider trading for a tractor or 2 or 3 depending on model and make.
A Delivery Note: In case you happen to buying this and want to head to Illinois we have a 9,000 lb. and 13" long tractor in this same location that would pay $800 revenue to be hauled just east of Moline, IL right off I-80. Or you can most likely find other freight out of Long Island using the trucking boards or uShip.com. For driving this truck from NY I"ve read online that even though the NY truck safety inspection hasn"t been renewed for 2016 on this truck if on the small chance you were to be stopped and you don"t have a sticker it is a $50 fine but they do not shut you down.
